Streamlining Negotiations, Improving Efficiency: Vietnamese Banking Industry Develops Common Fraud Handling Process

The Vietnamese banking industry is facing a significant challenge: how to uniformly handle suspicious fraudulent transactions. The Vietnam Banks Association (VNBA) recently stated that banks should adopt a unified approach to dealing with suspicious and potentially fraudulent accounts. This call stems from the current situation where different banks use varying methods to handle suspicious transactions, reflecting the industry’s need for standardized processes.

To address this challenge, VNBA plans to introduce a common coordination process in November this year. This process will provide banks with clear guidance on how to handle accounts and transactions that may involve fraudulent schemes. The initiative aims to improve collaboration efficiency between banks while ensuring more consistent and effective handling of suspicious transactions.

VNBA’s regulatory official, Nguyen Quoc Hung, emphasized the importance of a unified process. He pointed out that this concerns not only payment security but also information security and customer rights protection. By establishing unified standards, the banking industry hopes to better protect customer interests while enhancing the security and reliability of the entire payment system.

Notably, this upcoming common process will align with Vietnam’s existing non-cash payment regulations. This means that the new process must not only address current issues but also comply with the country’s overall regulatory framework for electronic payments and financial transactions. This alignment is crucial for ensuring the legality and enforceability of the new process.

The National Payment Corporation of Vietnam has also expressed support for this initiative. The corporation pointed out that the current differences in processes used by various banks to handle suspicious transactions increase the complexity of inter-bank coordination. A unified process will greatly simplify this coordination, enabling banks to handle various problematic cases more conveniently and efficiently.

Currently, the draft of this common coordination process is in its final stages and will soon be open for public comment. VNBA stated that they plan to officially release this process in November and promote its application among all VNBA member credit institutions. This timeline demonstrates the banking industry’s emphasis on this issue and its desire to accelerate the implementation of solutions.

This initiative reflects the proactive attitude of the Vietnamese banking industry in addressing fraud issues in an increasingly complex financial landscape. By establishing a unified handling process, the banking industry hopes to more effectively identify and detect suspicious transactions, thereby improving the security and reliability of the entire financial system.
