Vietnam’s E-Government Development Index Ranked Among “Very High” by the United Nations

On September 17, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs released the E-Government Survey Report (2024). The report revealed that Vietnam’s E-Government Development Index (EGDI) stood at 0.7709, placing the country in the “Very High” category. Vietnam ranked 71st out of the 193 countries surveyed, marking an improvement of 15 positions compared to its rankings in 2020 and 2022. Within its region, Vietnam climbed to 5th place, up one position from 2022.

The report highlighted that countries like Vietnam, which moved from the “High” to “Very High” EGDI category, demonstrated significant success in strengthening digital infrastructure, expanding internet connectivity, and deepening the application of e-government frameworks. Vietnam’s notable rise in ranking is primarily attributed to substantial investments in online public services. Countries with a similar EGDI and “Very High” level of telecommunications infrastructure can accelerate their digital development by improving online public service delivery and enhancing human capital.

The UN E-Government Survey Report is a globally recognized indicator assessing the e-government services of public administration sectors. The EGDI is evaluated based on three sub-indicators: online services, telecommunications infrastructure, and human resources. In the 2024 report, Denmark, Estonia, Singapore, South Korea, Iceland, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Australia, Finland, and the Netherlands ranked in the top ten, while China rose eight positions to rank 35th, its highest placement since the report’s inception.

Key Points:

  1. Vietnam’s E-Government Development Index is 0.7709, placing it in the “Very High” group with a global ranking of 71 and a regional ranking of 5.
  2. The improvement in Vietnam’s ranking is largely due to significant investments in online public services and the strengthening of digital infrastructure.
  3. The EGDI is assessed based on three sub-indicators: online services, telecommunications infrastructure, and human resources.
  4. The top ten countries in the 2024 report include Denmark, Estonia, Singapore, and South Korea, with China rising to 35th place.
