Ho Chi Minh City and China’s Chongqing Join Hands to Advance the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor

Cooperation Promotion Conference Successfully Held in Ho Chi Minh City

On September 24, the Ho Chi Minh City Trade and Investment Promotion Center hosted an important conference focusing on cooperation between Ho Chi Minh City and China’s Chongqing in the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor. This meeting provided a significant platform for deepening economic and trade exchanges between the two cities and jointly advancing the construction of the new corridor.

Ho Chi Minh City: A Key Engine of Vietnam’s Economic Development

At the conference, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Vo Van Hoan emphasized the city’s crucial position in Vietnam’s economic development. He pointed out that although Ho Chi Minh City only accounts for 0.6% of Vietnam’s land area, its economic contribution is significant, accounting for nearly 20% of the country’s GDP and 25% of fiscal revenue.

Vo Van Hoan also specifically mentioned that Ho Chi Minh City, with a population of nearly 10 million and a growing middle class, has become a huge market with great potential in the eyes of businesses. To further enhance the city’s competitiveness, Ho Chi Minh City is formulating several important plans, including increasing investment in logistics infrastructure, improving loading and unloading capacity and warehousing service capability, as well as building a regional logistics service supply center. Additionally, a proposal for the Cần Giờ non-tariff zone is also in preparation.

Chongqing: The Core Hub of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor

At the meeting, Vice Mayor of Chongqing Zheng Xiangdong introduced Chongqing’s important role in the construction of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor. In recent years, Chongqing has comprehensively elevated its position as a transportation and logistics center, successfully connecting China’s western provinces with ASEAN countries, and establishing links with major European markets through the China-Europe Railway Express.

Currently, the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor has formed three main logistics organization modes: rail-sea intermodal trains, cross-border buses, and international intermodal trains. This corridor network covers a wide range, connecting 72 cities and 154 train stations in 18 provinces of China, and reaching 538 ports in 125 countries and regions worldwide.

Vietnam: An Important Node in the New Corridor

Zheng Xiangdong emphasized that Vietnam occupies an important position in the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor. All three logistics organization modes have achieved seamless connection with Vietnam, providing a new platform for promoting win-win cooperation between Vietnam and China’s western regions as well as European regions.

This corridor not only greatly improves the efficiency of economic and trade exchanges between China’s western regions and ASEAN countries like Vietnam but also helps strengthen connections between Europe and Asia. Through this corridor, Vietnamese specialties such as rice, coffee, natural rubber, and fruits can be transported more conveniently to Chongqing and further sold to inland China and European markets.
