The Vietnam Ministry of Transport recently released a plan setting targets for electric vehicles to account for 30% of vehicles and electric motorcycles to reach 22% by 2030. This is one of several solutions developed by the ministry to achieve a 5.9% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector.
According to the plan, the Ministry of Transport will revise national technical standards for automobiles and update regulations related to electric vehicles. Meanwhile, the ministry will issue notices on road vehicle classification management, clearly identifying vehicles using clean and environmentally friendly energy, and develop standard specifications for roadside rest areas including charging stations.
The Ministry of Transport will also conduct research on charging infrastructure systems and incorporate them into the 2021-2030 road transport infrastructure planning, with a vision towards 2050. Additionally, the ministry will study and develop carbon credit trading and offset mechanisms for projects converting from fossil fuel vehicles to electric vehicles.
The plan also proposes deploying 623 compressed natural gas buses nationwide by 2030, with 423 in Ho Chi Minh City and 200 in Hanoi. Furthermore, all road vehicles will use E5 biofuel by 2030.
Key Points:
- Vietnam sets targets for electric vehicle and motorcycle share by 2030.
- Will revise relevant technical standards and build charging infrastructure.
- Plans to promote compressed natural gas buses and biofuel use.
- Will study establishment of carbon credit trading mechanisms.
- These measures aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector.
