Vietnam’s tourism industry saw significant growth in 2024, particularly during the first eight months. According to data released by the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, the country welcomed 1.43 million international visitors in August 2024, marking a month-on-month increase of 24.5% and a year-on-year rise of 17.7%. Over the first eight months of 2024, the total number of international tourists reached nearly 11.4 million, representing a 45.8% year-on-year increase and a 1% rise compared to the same period before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019.
South Korean and Chinese Tourists Account for Nearly Half
Among the international tourists visiting Vietnam, visitors from South Korea and China accounted for almost half of the total. South Korea continued to be the largest source market, with over 3 million visitors, representing 26.4% of the total. China followed with 2.4 million visitors, accounting for 21.4%. Additionally, visitors from Taiwan, the United States, and Japan ranked among the top source markets.
Other Key International Source Markets
Apart from South Korea and China, Australia, Malaysia, India, Cambodia, and Thailand were also among the top ten international source markets for Vietnam. In August 2024, the country saw a significant month-on-month increase in the number of international tourists: Japan saw an 81.1% rise, South Korea increased by 36.2%, China by 23.2%, the UK by 35.1%, France by 54.9%, Russia by 36.3%, Spain by 171.7%, and Italy registered an astonishing growth of 289.1%.
Overall Trend for the First Eight Months
During the period from January to August 2024, the total number of international tourists received by Vietnam increased by 45.8% year-on-year. Most major markets witnessed significant growth, with Chinese tourists growing by 157.7%, South Korea by 32.4%, Japan by 32%, and Taiwan by 70.6%.
In the Southeast Asian market, Indonesian tourists grew by 100%, the Philippines by 59.4%, Malaysia by 7.0%, Cambodia by 15.1%, and Singapore by 5.4%. In contrast, Thailand saw a decline of 14.7%.
These figures demonstrate that Vietnam’s tourism industry has rapidly recovered after the pandemic, with the continuous growth in international visitors indicating that Vietnam has become a key destination for global tourists.
